The women who was attacked with a machete in her home and in front of her daughter by 'failed' refugee claimant Alex Ishmail Murwanashyaka describes the incident:

A Newton mom who was savagely cut with a machete during a home robbery last week says she was attacked by her neighbour.

The 36-year-old victim, who asked not to be identified, was sleeping on her couch with her nine-year-old daughter in their basement suite when the attacker crept in through a window she'd left open for her cat last Tuesday at about 7 a.m.

The attacker awoke the mom by clamping his hand over her mouth and telling her "shut up, shut up," she said.

She said he hit her three times.

"I got cut in the first two to three minutes," she told the Now.

Then he tied them up with a spool of wire. At one point during the 25-minute-long ordeal, she said, she feared he was going to kill or rape her after he told her, "I'm going to jail for this anyway."

The woman said she begged her attacker, "Not in front of my daughter, please take my car."

He relented, and left with $15, a bank card and the woman's '91 white Mercury Topaz. When the mother and daughter heard the car leave, she said, "We just started screaming for the lady that lives upstairs."

The robber didn't physically harm the girl, but her mother's wounds are horrific. She suffered two cuts to her right leg requiring 11 stitches and eight stitches. The left leg got the worst of it - a cut four and a half inches deep behind her thigh.

Police arrested a 23-year-old Surrey man roughly five hours after the attack.

Alex Ishmail Murwanashyaka has been charged with break-and-enter, unlawful confinement, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, robbery, using a mask during an offence, obstructing police and fraud.

The victim, who was released from hospital Monday, was disgusted to learn that Murwanashyaka, a failed refugee claimant, was the subject of a deportation order to Rwanda before the attack, but has not been removed from Canada because he's waiting to be tried on charges of sexually assaulting minors.

"Why was he out?" she demands. "He should've been gone. Take him back (to Rwanda), maybe they'll behead him there.

"I want him to suffer," she said. (Surrey Now)

This story is frighteningly similar to the recent cases involving  Mohamed Hagi Mohamud and Samuel Martin Luin.

Or maybe, they won't even notice and off he'll go. I have absolutely zero faith in the ability (or willingness?) of the powers that be to do the right thing.
