Harini Sivalingam of the Canadian Tamil Congress (a LTTE mouthpiece) has an op-ed in today's Toronto Star regarding the banning of the World Tamil Movement in Canada for ties to terrorism: In the meantime, an entire community has been tarnished and painted with the same brush. After the listing of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) by the Canadian government in April 2006, there was significant backlash against members of the Tamil Canadian community who experienced discriminatory treatment at schools, workplaces and in the general public. There is a concern among Tamil Canadians that this listing will have a more profoundly negative impact on the community at large.
Martin Niemoller's famous poem illustrates the importance of speaking out for vulnerable community groups: "First they came for the Jews and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew. Then they came for the Communists and I did not speak out because I was not a Communist. Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for me." The listing of the WTM is a clear instance that "they have come for the Tamils." Even if one is not a Tamil, we should all speak out and voice our concerns about protecting important civil liberties and preserving fundamental Canadian values. (Toronto Star)
The vulnerable community group being preyed on by some of their own -- No mention that $1 million a month was funelled through the organization and sent out of the country and no mention that that $1 million a month was partly gathered through extortion of the Canadian Tamil community (see Human Rights Watch -- Tamil Families and Businesses in Canada, UK Threatened) and no mention of the thousands of Tamil Canadians who breathed a sigh of relief once the news came down that the World Tamil Movement was no more. We seen the same thing when Hezbollah and Hamas were finally listed as terrrorist entities - apologists came out of the woodwork crying that they were just social justice organizations and the media was only too happy to publish their propaganda -- the truth eventually sinks in and the controversy fades away, but the apologist views stay on record forever. Careful Harini, someday we may be coming for you.
