Understanding "Rights" Pt.2 : The Lies of Collectivism Print E-mail
Written by WL Mackenzie Redux
Monday, 30 June 2008

In part one we saw how the two real forces at play in all politics are individualism versus collectivism, and how the source of a "right" determinines its nature. In part 2 we expand into the basic fallacies of collectivism, the greatest of which is the concept that "groups" have rights. We see the reality that only an individual can have rights and there is no "group" (state) without individuals.

We must remind ourselves that it is the misunderstnding of these basic social-political concepts which is at the core of all the dysfunctional legislating and administration in this country. Are we collectivist statists or liberal democratic individualists? You can't be both.

This is a truly excellent series. It teaches much which has been neglected by our collectivistic schools, run by teachers in collectivist unions...

And I like your 'take' on the Tao.

Thank you.

Oh Gawd, he screwed up 'unalienable'.

I know he wants to give the noun 'right' the highest adjective he has, but 'unalienable' doesn't mean big or important or even fundamental.

There is not an unalienable right to bear arms. It is not intrinsic to my being. Were I in a forest, alone, with no rifle available, nature would not provide one for my right to be exercised. It is separate from my being. It is alienable.

In a forest, with another being - human or not - which threatens my life, I have a right to defend myself. That is unalienable.

Some Venezuelan I read recently thought the right to justice was unalienable. No. One doesn't. We form laws and trials to try and provide justice, but it isn't a right.
