So, when does life begin? The politically correct answer is that life begins at birth. All that biomass inside the womb is so much mush until the birth event. If you take a machete, and carve out an eight month old foetus from its mothers belly, you may have committed a serious assault on the mother, but the foetus, even though it will tend to stay alive (unless you use your machete again), is not human.

Some people, however, believe that life begins at conception. To them, abortion is murder. To them, carving out an eight month old foetus with a machete is much more than an aggravated assault upon the mother, it is an assault upon a second human being.

Conveniently, those people who believe that life begins at conception can be profiled: we call them Christians. You can stuff adjectives in front of that noun and call them fundamentalists, fanatics, or fascists. And it is important for the success of the abortion rights movement that their critics be proven wrong for them to continue to expand and deepen the network of abortion clinics, abortion enabling activists, and abortion studies faculty in universities.

Christianity can be attacked on a number of fronts. It is not a science, so statistical data, experimentation, and logic can be used to find flaws in the various beliefs. The historical record yields a rich source of anecdotes of tragedy and outrage committed by Christian adherents. By attacking Christianity in our schools, our courts, and in our thought police tribunals, we make it harder for Christians to openly resist what they believe to be a horrible crime.

In addition to attacking Christians to make them shut up, one can also celebrate all voices by having a media that endlessly retells, repeats, and regurgitates in new chunky form the standard scripture on why abortion must be free and accessible. The media also performs an important role in suppressing stories that make abortion look bad, or that bring into question their fundamental dogmas. For example, I point to the absence of stories in the media about the corrupt medical practitioners caught and convicted of bilking the public health system, the frequent arrivals of chopped up women in our emergency wards from back street abortions, the use of abortion to disproportionately terminate females, and the percentage of women who have disturbing psychological effects from the procedure.

Abortion rights are a sector in a larger battle. After some thirty, forty years of conflict, the Christians have been defeated. Abortion rights exist in the land … no longer do women have to go to a back street abortionist to get an abortion, women are empowered, and all women who undergo the procedure can move their lives forward without psychologically traumatic social stigma. Christians have been pushed back and are on the defensive. The last vestiges of Christian culture are being purged from public education, the courts, and public spaces, under the watchful eye of activist teachers, lawyers, judges, and bureaucrats. While several Toronto high schools boast Muslim prayer rooms, they do not have Christian chapels. This is good news for the abortion rights movement.

Those few Christians who still cling to their obsolete beliefs have learnt to be silent in a society that celebrates all voices. Statistically, they do not share in the bounty of social assistance, instead working for themselves or corporatist structures. They have little influence in how social spending is spent, which is far more important that actually earning the money that funds social spending. What little resources they have, of money, of volunteer effort, are futile in the face of paid activists, paid academics, paid judges, paid bureaucrats, and paid media, who can shout down, baffle with bullshit, pre-judge, administratively sabotage, or ignore, according to their profession and revolutionary temperament. This is how it should be in a free society that embraces diversity.

The silent Christians are below the radar. They are now powerless, like a submerged submarine, or a battery of howitzers dug in behind a hill. Like many other groups that have learnt silence from the left, they only really talk to each other, or other groups that have been silenced as well. This is how it should be. The media can now focus on the vision, not the news; academics can expound their deductive utopias, and not the foresights of inductive reasoning; the judiciary can rule based on their beliefs, not the precedents of Common Law; bureaucrats can do as they see fit, not follow their job descriptions.

There will be no changes to access to abortion in Canada. There will be increased funding for clinics, advertising, and academic research. The silent and the invisible are no match for those that are paid and entrenched to defend the pretty rainbow, feed the beautiful unicorn, and protect the four leaf clovers of politically correct correctness, this side of early retirement with a good package.

Thank you Leslie.

Cascadian: Considering the similar viewpoints of Muslims and Christians on this issue, but the different reaction from the politically correct to these religions (one gets prayer rooms in schools, the other is denounced from the Darwin pulpit), it would not be rocket science to consider reflaging in order to push the agenda forward. Much as the Marxists will paint themselves green to expedite their red agenda.

Yes, but the sensible answer is that life begins at twenty, that way you can keep your teenagers in line with threats of a retroactive abortion. smilies/wink.gif

Sorry, dmorris, I was ill informed.

According to Paladiea, over in the conversation thread over at StormyDaysOfMarch, life begins when the foetus is viable ourside of the womb.

However, the womans right of control over her body is trump over this.

Go over and read the thread, no need to listen to me misinterpret things.

"back street abortionist" - a myth that has been given a life all it's own by people who have no regard for the truth unless your reference to hospitals in Canada who did and do abortions as "back street" and abortion clinics as "main street"

I could never get my head around it, the feminist insisting that an abortion is true equality for the female. How does killing my baby, make me free? What is it making me free from? having a conscience? I guess it would free up responsibilty for another life, but how is that suppose to make me more equal as a female? Is selfishness the ultimate equalizer that feminist seek? I have known females who have had abortions, for the cause. Terribly fucked up individuals, just walking sacks of ism's.

Peter B:

Get to know some emergency health care workers. If they trust you, they will tell you that 'back street abortions' still go on. Even with all the money, advertising, drop in clinics, and so on, we still have women climbing onto the kitchen table to get butchered. It is not very politically correct; it disproves the 'we must have legal abortion to stop back street abortion' arguments; the media does not report it (it makes their side look bad); there are sanctions against those in the industry that could blow the lid on it. I have not the resources of the media to research and expose this, so it will just have to be kept on the level of rumor an innuendo. One obstacle is that it tends to be restricted to certain profilable groups who celebrate woman butchery as part of their culture.

On the larger scale, it points to the other dirty secrets that make the abortion industry use shrill words and actions as distractions. Using anger as a distraction, a diversion, is right out of a Junior Commando course.

Cultures where gender selection is practised still have granny carving up the carcass on the kitchen table. The health care workers I talked to stated the government will only spring for three or four abortions per bitch, and then they start questioning. They can pay and have as many ultra sounds as they like to determine the gender, but more than 3 abortions is questioned by the medical community. Unless of course the doctor is of the same culture and is a strong advocate of the gender selection practises.

So Henry Morgentaler's just been awarded the Order of Canada...? 'Sure makes a mockery of that little white pin. This man, almost more than any other Canadian (with assistance, of course, from PET and John Turner and hordes of feminist, lib-left, secular humanist cheerleaders), has been responsible for the premature and untimely demise of hundreds of thousands, now actually millions, of children in the womb. (They must be children because, if left for the full gestation period of nine months that's what would be born--a child, not a cow or a fly or a "foetus".)

You sure got it right about the role the MSM plays. Years ago on the front page of the Probe and Fail, there were two articles on the front page: one on a new clinic Henry Morgentaler was opening in Quebec and what a wonderful thing this was for "equality (sic) for women." Beside it, was another article on the Quebec government's becoming alarmed at the rapidly declining birth rate in the province. The PQ Government was offering cash incentives to couples who had more than one child.

'No connection was made between increasing numbers of state-paid abortions at Morgentaler clinics and the fact that the birth rate in the province was spiralling downwards, with very negative effects on the economy.

I am sick that Henry Morgentaler has been given the Order of Canada. The OC no longer has any meaning--in fact, it is now a disgrace and a sham.

Abortion is neither freeing nor just, for either mother or baby. Women suffer psychological effects of an abortion long after the procedure and are at higher risk of contracting breast cancer (Brind and Daling).

Henry Morgentaler has become rich off the avails of abortion and has now been given positive public recognition for his services as an abortion-provider. The Order of Canada is a travesty and its being awarded to Mr. Morgentaler further proves that our dystopian Deranged Dominion (thanks to Mark Steyn for a most apt moniker) is fast becoming a Banana Republic.

Honey Pot: gender selection is not an issue for the left side of the aisle...

been around the block: Paladiea over at StormyDaysOfMarch believes that a womans right to control her own body is trump over the right to life. Go over there to read what she said. Sure, life begins at viability, but even a viable human can be sacrificed on the altar of a womans right to choose. So, it is an agree to disagree issue.

Likewise, the use of abortion as gender selection. The right of a woman to control her own body is trump over this issue.

Some people value human life over a womans control of her body; some people value a womans control over her body over human life.

Those that support womans control have more partisans emplaced in positions of power: the courts, the government, the government paid activists, education. They also have a more active and better funded propaganda arm, as well as a booming kettle drum in the media, as well as a indoctrination cadre in education. The womans right to control faction are also allied with other factions. They support those that support them. They gather resources, and deny resources to their opponents. Nothing new here to anyone familiar with guerrila warfare.

Fenris, I went and I read, and I had to laugh. Stupid females who profess how their mothers told them if they ever got pregnant to come to them, and they would arrange for an abortion. These stupid females believing their mothers, are liberated females who love them, and wanted to protect them from hardship. Not even bright enough to realize they were participants in an honour killing. Yes, tell mommy first, wouldn't want to sully the family name by having the daughter knocked up wbc.

'Turns out the two GOVERNMENT MEMBERS of the nine-member committee who approved the awarding of the Order of Canada for Henry-Dr.-Death-Morgentaler opposed it. So, Canadians can't lay the blame on the CPC or PMSH--as the lefties and their MSM flying monkey squads would be all too happy to have happen.

In a gruesomely ironic twist, the committee members who voted for HM to get the OC had "concerns for his health" as he has recently had a stroke and the OC is never awarded posthumously.

So, what about the committee's concern for "the health" of the millions of aborted babies who will never be in a position to receive either the OC or any other kind of award in their non-existing lifetimes? No first, second, or third prize ribbons in the kindergarten 50-yard dash, no academic prizes, no swimming, baseball, basketball, or soccer cups proudly sitting on a shelf in their bedrooms...

This misplaced "concern" for the health of Henry Morgentaler suggests a misshapen and macabre logic on the part of the ra-ra committee members who insisted on the awarding of Canada's highest civilian honour to a man who has deprived countless future citizens of their good health.
