One monkey won't stop the show Print E-mail
Written by Darcey
Thursday, 14 August 2008

I apologize to readers who recently came to Dust my Broom and were pounded by popups. We were compromised but we are cool now. Nothing in the database was messed with as the incident occured in the backend. I will however be forcing all broomers to change their passwords. In the meantime as I rebuild the place tunes and dead raccoons!

Up yours bitches! Getting it on:

Canada's favorite racist Kathy Shaidle has taken objection to my choice of Shakura S'Aida's One monkey won't stop the show and offers up Big Maybelle's 1955 version. Compare and contrast.

I have to keep bungy cords on my garbage can to keep the buggers out of it. Really want them gone not dead tho, just like the huge frikkin spiders that love my bedroom.

Nice catch!
Them suckers can get very nasty when corned... ahem... have experience this, once.
Won't be doing that again!

Only thing that soothed it down was a half pint of beer - well it was full when sent in it's direction... then we left it alone, checked back, beer was empty and the coon gone thankfully!

We guesstimated about 30 to 35 pounds of drunken raccoon staggered off to the forest.

About those sneaky sleazy gremlin's attack, yeah they sure like to attack and kill blogs eh?
Gee 'ya think they don't know we're the "nice" country...

Might be getting some from South America, next. Anywhere from Brazil.

Hey, howdja get a dead coon, Darcey?

Here in the Big TO, coons have "a right" to live "in their natural habitat," which seems to be everyone's backyards, rooves, and garbage bins. They're EVERYWHERE!! No dead coons allowed...

We have found that male testosterone in urine is something they don't like, so my husband's been obliging and they seem to be leaving us alone...for now or unless it rains. smilies/cheesy.gif

From the old days out on the trapline. It was the first one I ever caught and it was kind of a novelty.

DEAD? not alive? smilies/shocked.gif I always thought this beautiful critter was a - well - a pet. smilies/sad.gif I marvelled at the beauty of the beast. We had an in-house racoon who lived on our porch for quite a few years vying with "our" feral cat for the prized seat on an old lazyboy. Kitty lost and slept under the chair.

Awww Elane that incredible, and that the coon tolerated the cat in such close proximity.

This morning, I was the lucky recipient of a long visit from the local Blue Heron, it was resting on our front walkway...we're very rural now, have a stream flanking the one side of several acres and they are always flying in and out from it. It's heavily forested, which is why we bought here...so it stayed for about an hour. I did notice a couple of spots of blood on the one walkway stone, but it flew off with our much distress and the second spot it rested on only had a speck of blood.

I know bitches in heat will spot, but not sure about these large birds.

The Elusive Blue Heron. For years I have been tracking a heron. I trudged through the mudbanks off Wreck Beach (yes, fully clothed, except for my high heels, oh and ok, I did hike my skirt up briefly) stalking the wily heron with my camera. The lovely bird flew away as I was knee deep in the mud. I actually have a long distance shot of the bird upon my retreat from the mudswamp and only I know there is actually a heron in that photo - it is a dark dot.

I continue to stalk the heron, my nemisis. A month or so ago, I was at a "nature" park (read that as manicured park, with a parking lot, by an Inlet) and my companion pointed out three herons standing in a pool. "Don't move!" I whispered as I began my crouched stalk with my cel phone cam poised to shoot. The herons did not move - to my delight. How smart was I smilies/smiley.gif What a clever stalker indeed.

So happy to finally get the big shot of three wonderful herons in a tidal pool. smilies/tongue.gif smilies/tongue.gif smilies/tongue.gif

Bliss. All previous failures forgotten.

I was almost prone, stalking stalking when I suddenly realized they were three iron statues set in the water while the real meal deal was flying away. It was my old friend, the elusive heron, laughing at me, again.

When we (my little family and I) heard terrible fighting on the porch we assumed it was the Feral Cat (lovingly named Gin-Gin by one of my children) fending off other Feral Cat intruders. We did not interfere having been ripped apart by Gin-Gin in any and all efforts to become her new best friends (we are still not sure she was female). We cleaned up the wads of fur after these fights and thought nothing of it. But one night the fight was particularly long, ongoing and annoying. I was going to referee the finale of this midnight fur-fight with a household broom and it was then that I was confronted by the racoon snarling at me. Rocky was not the least bit cute. In fact, s/he had a mean look about it unlike Darcey's DEAD Rocky

smilies/sad.gif

who I thought was just a great big happy lap racoon. I had no idea until today that Darcey's "pet" was (weeping) DEAD. I envied him his pet racoon.

I live/work in the middle of a fast growing city. Vancouver. I am one of the many commuters and city-nature is just as trapped as I am. How nice Id that you have a heron who visits you.

They are tough to get a good shot of. I've come across many and they fly like ravens as soon as they notice you paying attention.

Yeah thanks Elane, we are indeed fortunate. Bit of luck on finding this spot and nailing it, but was well worth the long wait, efforts and sacrifices.

Darcey is right they are very wary birds, looks like this one may be settling on our stretch of this stream. Saw it glide in around 7:pm just below the tree top line, like I use to see them fly over head back to their nesting grounds back home, about the same time in the evenings. If I get some good shots I'll pass them along, so far he/she was too far for our camera's lens and my not so hot photograph skills to get anything decent so far.

BTW My daughter informed me that this is not their mating season, ahem...she's a bit of a birds of prey person, just as an interest though, since she was young. Falcons, hawks, owls, eagles, and etc.
She also stated that losing a feather can cause a couple of drops of blood.

They use to have large dogs on this property that went in the stream frequently, as was told to us ( the central vac smelled VERY strongly of wet dog so can believe it), so maybe now with no dogs in it that Heron will settle in and return, that'd be very nice.

Hope not!
In fact I believe they are a protected bird here.

Likely be good to eat, but they are so majestic that I'll stay with turkey and the occasional plump duck. smilies/grin.gif

My diet is rapidly changing - ever since I read (a few days ago) that our Pacific Salmon are eating plastic bags and bottles !! That did it for me. Rice, beans, salads and NO herons. Picked up the groceries today - 3 bags full $135.+. No meat, no fish, no poultry - no heron.

Ever since I read that the salmon on the west coast are eating plastic bags (this past week's nutritional news) etc. my changed diet is changing ever more - no meat, no poultry (bye bye butter chicken), and now, no fish. Heron is definitely not on the menu. Bye bye ostrich, bye bye buffalo, bye bye moose smilies/sad.gif Hello beans and rice.

Sad to hear that Elane, I really enjoy grilled salmon, as much as pickerel.

Managed to get a few decent picture of that Blue Heron, but not sure if ok to post, nor do I know how.
