Tears are not enough: Thug given the I am victim treatment Print E-mail
Written by Darcey
Tuesday, 26 August 2008

Four men entered the home of Jensen Young in St. Catharines, Ontario armed with machetes and guns with the intent to rob him. In the melee while apparently protecting his family Jensen shot one of the intruders, one 19-year-old Pedro Bello. Sad, because it appears that Pedro was a really nice guy when he wasn't out breaking into peoples homes with guns and machetes:

...friends of slain 19-year-old Pedro Bello continued to pour condolences and memories on a Facebook page set up in his memory Monday.

Bello, a former student at Denis Morris Secondary School and St. Catharines Collegiate, made friends easily and was outgoing, those who knew him say.

“He automatically made friends,” Katie Kalagian told The Standard. “He was always joking and laughing.”

Kalagian said Bello acted like an older brother to those he knew, was loyal and respected his friends.

“There was an energy about him,” she said. “He could reassure you. He could give you advice.”

She and friend Bri McLaughlin grew up with Bello, originally from Portugal, after he arrived at St. Nicholas elementary school.

They’d spend their summers in Montebello Park until their curfews were up, and as they got older, continued to hang out at parties.

“He would call us sisters,” McLaughlin said. “He was always smiling. I’ve never seen Pedro not happy.”

They said Bello was a real people person, always out and about with friends.

“Even though he might have gotten caught up in stuff, he really was a sweet kid,” McLaughlin said. “We’re just lucky we got to be his friends for so long.”

Niagara Regional Police said Bello was shot in the basement of the Carlton Street home just before 2 p.m. Saturday. (St. Catherines Standard)

And then he went straight to hell. Pedro Bello, we hardly knew you.

Why do people think they have to defend thugs and thieves with inane comments on their character like:

?He automatically made friends,? ?He was always joking and laughing,? and "There was an energy about him"?

Huh? I guess it was a big joke to Bello, the breaking into a stranger's house with guns and a machete and, you know, a certain energy to him as he kicked down the door or broke through that window.

'Nice guy to have as a friend???? 'Too bad, so sad his energy, joking, and friendliness have been cut short. 'Good thing for people who weren't his friend...

Oh Been I agree. These thugs are what they are - thugs. Creeps. The winner of late being the creeps who assaulted a 97 year old woman while breaking into her home. I bet their mothers liked them too. Or maybe not.

I could have given him some advice too..if you want to live to be older than 20, don't break into people's homes where there is a good possibility that someone will kill you for your efforts.

I wonder, did you still have that 'smile on your face' when your victim sent you into the afterlife?

Btw, the victim is being charged with manslaughter.Once again, the wheels of Canadian justice start to grind another victim into the dirt for defending his life and property.

well to be fair the article states that everyone knew each other but still holy crap. Hopefully Jensen will get the same treatment as a guy involved in a similar Lethbridge case. Two men broke into his house and then into his bedroom where he was sleeping with his pregnant girlfriend. He killed one of them with their own weapon but was recently 'discharged'.

"Whalen was also charged with failing to comply with a probation order and possession contrary to order.

May faces an additional charge of failing to comply with recognizance of bail and possession contrary to order."

Gee, only 50% of the attackers were on probation. The justice system must be working.

It's sad the young fellow who was shot will never get a chance to violate HIS parole, sniffle. (insert teary-eyed smiley)

Funny how almost every criminal is a nice guy, but then you have to realize that "everybody loves somebody sometime".

Ditto, WLMR.

He probably was an outgoing, confident guy full of humor and liked
by his friends. And on the other hand, he was also a home invader.
People who do bad things are not consistenly nasty and evil, other
wise, they'd be easy to identify. Often, the most friendly seeming
individual can be a scheming con artist, and in fact, in order to
be a successful con artist you have to be friendly and outgoing.
So I understand how people can have differing views of the same individual. His friends likely see him a lot differently than Jensen.
I hope Jensen isn't the one who is charged, though. Often, in these cases, people like Jensen end up as being seen as the bad guys and have to go to court to argue their right to defend their home.

True, Rumple, some of the most charming guys I've ever met are crooks at heart, some go into legitimate business, and some choose crime as a career. It's easier, and you don't have to get up so early in the morning.

Behind almost every small time criminal I've known, there stands a disillusioned young woman, trying to survive with their two or three kids on welfare, while Mr.Personality does another stretch in jail.

Every one who thinks they KNOW the perpetrator, and that there must be some mistake, should get a copy of Ann Rule's, "The Stranger Beside Me", or read some of Dr.Robert Hare's books on charming criminals.

And I DO hope the fellow defending himself is treated as well by the system as the perpetrators of this incident, two of whom simply must have their parole revoked. At least you'd think so.

It does mention they all knew each other but this was also not their first home invasion.

Knowing the part of town where this happened I'm not all all surprised.

No sympathy.

He seems like a swell guy, and his motto of "a palm for the bitch and a machete for the snitch", might just become Mitchieville's new tagline.

This is sad now saint catharines has a little less diversity to embrace. We might as well have just shot him when he stepped off the airplane for all the enriching he allowed. This is a travesty, fewer homes will be broken into, Criminals might feel a sense of unease as they climb through the window for their next home invasion with a machete in hand.

If you are a liberal it doesn't seem there's a good side to this. Maybe give some money to the John Howard society so that other criminals can get support or to the united way it supports criminals and not victims of crime. Your dollars can help put the country on the right path where criminals come first because victims deserve it.

Guns in canaduh,

thats true but sometime I think it's best to keep a good shovel on hand because I don't trust the courts.

I'm told that one person near saint catharines got 8 years because they shot the guy as he was leaving.

Jesus. Where would the MSM be without Facebook to pad their stories these days?

I used to think the worst example of lazy ass journalism was "Our intern Googled CBC News has learned...". But this is getting ridiculous.

Of course, when you go to make one of those ugly "tributes" to yer homey, it might help to have a picture OTHER than a mug shot, if only to drive home his victimness:
