Now is the time at the Broom when we juxtapose PDF Print E-mail

From a supposed news story on the front page of the Globe and Mail (print headline on p. 4 continuation):
Interview highlights how far out of step Ottawa has fallen [no er, faith, I guess]

...

The interview made it strikingly apparent how far out of step Mr. Harper's government has fallen from Western European and U.S. views, especially on climate change...

From another news story, also on p. 4 (online headline):

Leaders urged to endorse 2-degree limit

Canada and the U.S. will feel the heat as G8 heads of government address climate-change issue [print headline "World leaders urged to make deep emission cuts"--different message, eh?]

...the Canadian government has committed to reduce emissions by 20 per cent from 2006 levels by that year, while legislation that passed the U.S. House of Representatives and is now being debated in the Senate would cut U.S. emissions by 17 per cent from 2005 levels by 2020...

Huh?!?  Globeite Doug Saunders, the "reporter" for the first piece, has not in fact written a news story; rather it's an opinion piece dedicated to skewering the Conservative government.  Fie.

More juxtaposin':

From Lorne Gunter:

Suppressing climate skeptics

From our greatest and goodest columnist:

On climate change, Ottawa's still emitting hot air

A earlier post juxtaposin' Mr Simpson on the subject:

Not a headline you'll see in Canada

Apologies to Kate McMillan.

Ahh, Climate Change, wait, let me put my tinfoil hat on first. I like to deal in reality on this issue, you know like measured and factual information and not computer models.

The climate has changed a great deal in the past.

The climate will probably change a great deal in the future.

We are not in control of the earth's climate, and our understanding of how it works is not complete.

All life on this planet adapts to the changing climate or becomes extinct, there are no exceptions to this rule.

There is no such thing as "settled science", and consensus is just nonsense.

Yes, pollution is bad and we are causing it. We have an obligation to lessen the environmental impacts of our economic growth, which we have gotten better at over the last 100 years or so. I expect that trend to continue.

Fossil fuels are the cheapest and most abundant form of compact portable energy available on this planet, they will be used until something else takes their place. Baring a Nobel level breakthrough in the near term, my money is on nucs.

The minuscule emissions from Canada are already dwarfed by those of the developing nations. Did you see the smog in Beijing last summer? That was not a fluke as China's yearly increase alone from 07/08 is more than 4 times our annual average. http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/cfapp...id=1&aid=8

CO2 is a natural byproduct life on earth, and forms the food source for all primary producers, like plankton and plants. Hard to see how putting more food into the building blocks of all life on this planet can be all bad.

The WWF is, like most on the "right" side of this debate, set to make some rather large profits from all this. Advocating a point of view is fine, setting up an internal consulting business to profit from the results of that advocacy smells, period.

That pretty much covers my position, no real need to talk about hockey sticks studies, polar bears, Cap and Trade, Global temperatures, wind/tidal/solar power, glaciers, ice or the main stream media. And no, I don't feel guilty for living in a western democratic nation, but apparently lots of other folks do.

You can -ic me at will.

Mitch

PS. Talk about hubris, just in case David Archibald is right, does that 2 degree limit agreement from the G8 work in both directions?

If a hundred thousand loon are screeching.... it makes no difference than if it is only one.

Loons are loons.

Ever been camping and heard the call of the loon?

Only to be "entertained" thereafter by the campground variety doing their best to imitate?

OMMAG, that's insulting to loons. Their call is hauntingly beautiful. The warmmongers noise is just a bunch of loud, discordant cacophony. "All sound and fury, signifying nothing."

Yeah, the loon's (the bird) call is hauntingly fantastic. When I hear it, I know I'm home.....
